The Wider World

Other places we like to travel

One thing we have learnt over the years is that if you really want to experience a country, the best way to do it is on a horse (or on foot if necessary). Travel slowly and immerse yourself in the local culture and landscape. Think of it as 'slow travel', rather than watching the world go by in a blur, from inside a vehicle. These are some trips we have done in other parts of the world, and would happily do again.

Ethiopia
Ethiopia

Ethiopia's rarely visited Bale Mountains are perfect for horse trekking and hiking. In 2015 and 2016, John had the pleasure of leading horse treks here on behalf of Unicorn Trails. The culture, wildlife and landscapes here are truly unique. He's been wanting to get back ever since, whether on a horse, or hiking. Keen to join him?

Afghanistan
Afghanistan

Yes, you read that right. It might seem hard to believe, but not all of Afghanistan is war-torn and off-limits. In the north-east corner of the country, the Wakhan corridor has long been a peaceful haven. In 2013 and 2014 we decided to arrange horse treks there. Let's just say it was an experience not soon forgotten. We could be tempted to return.

Morocco
Morocco

When we heard about the opportunity to join a month long ride across Morocco in 2020, from the Algerian border to the Atlantic coast (only 900km!), John and Sam didn't take much convincing. It was a fantastic experience, with long days in the saddle on speedy Arab and Barb stallions, camping in the desert at the end of each day, with a wonderful team of local people from Sporttravel Maroc. Interested in another long Moroccan ride? We are!
